Site details

Site description: A deep estuary with some remnant brackish marshes, extensive mudflats and sandbanks. There is a small rocky islet at the mouth of the estuary and a large coastal cliff in the west of the area.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important site for passage and wintering waders and Platalea leucorodia and resident seabirds.
Delineation rationale: 2015-04-23 (BL Secretariat): site area adjusted from 4000 ha (IBA2000) to 20860 ha (Arcos et al. 2009).

Threats

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The main threats include disturbance from tourists and intense shellfish gathering and trawling. The bottom of the estuary has been damaged by dredging. There is a management plan for the Biosphere Reserve. Hunting is forbidden.
