Site details
Site description: The site includes a large expanse of land devoted to agriculture and cattle ranching, with large drainage channels that retain some aquatic vegetation. Many areas flood in winter.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important site for migrant raptors and storks and foraging area for dispersing juvenile raptors. It is also a major migratory bottleneck, where about 85,000 Ciconia ciconia pass regularly in spring. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aquila adalberti (non-breeding), Tetrax tetrax (35 resident pairs) and Otis tarda (4 resident pairs).
