Site details

Site description: The KBA Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape covers an area of 1607.116 sq km and it's located within the provinces of Tumbes and Contralmirante Villar in the department of Tumbes and the province of Sullana in the department of Piura. This KBA follows the same boundaries as the Cerros de Amotape National Park plus the Angostura-Faical Regional Conservation Area boundaries. The altitude range of the KBA Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape is 50-1550 masl. It presents four life zones with a variety of plant associations, among which the ceibal, the chaparral and the algarrobal predominate. The topography is influenced by the foothills of the Amotapes mountain range, with the presence of deep canyons and ravines. Within the Park there are archaeological remains such as Rica Playa. The area has been the subject of ornithological evaluations by D. and E. Tallman in 1972 and by Whiffin and Sadgrove in 2001, in collaboration with ProAves Peru. ProNaturaleza also carries out projects in the area. Between 1996 and 2000, PROFONANPE developed the project 'Conservation of the biodiversity of the Cerros de Amotape National Park'. The main climate types in the KBA Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape is: 1) Warm, semi-arid with dry winter and spring, the maximum temperature ranges from 31°C to 33°C , the minimum temperature ranges from 19°C to 21°C and the annual precipitation ranges from 200 mm to 500 mm. The other climate types present in this region are: 2) Warm, semi-arid with dry winter, 3) Temperate, semi-arid with dry winter, 4) Warm, semi-dry with dry winter, 5) Warm, semi-dry with dry winter and spring and 6) Temperate, semi-arid with dry winter and spring. The KBA Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape presents ca. 87% of Bosque estacionalmente seco de colina y montaña (Seasonally dry hill and montane forest), ca. 12% of Bosque tropical del Pacífico (Pacific tropical forest) - (Tumbes), agricultural zones, rivers and Bosque estacionalmente seco ribereño (Seasonally dry riparian forest) - (Algarrobal) (less than 1% each one).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. The KBA Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape harbors one Vulnerable and range restricted species of plant (Erythroxylum pacificum), two threatened mammals (Cebus aequatorialis and Marmosa phaea), two range restricted bats (Sturnira bakeri and Rhogeessa velilla), one Vulnerable lizard (Stenocercus limitaris), one range restricted fish (Chilobrycon deuterodon) and eighteen range restricted bird species.

Manageability of the site: Since this KBA enclosures the Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape, it can be potentially manageable by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP.
Other site values: No indigenous communities were identified
Delineation rationale: The boundary of the KBA Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape follows the boundary of the Cerros de Amotape National Park at its eastern, southern, western and northern ends. To the northwest, the boundaries follow the Angostura Faical Conservation Area.
