Site description: This IBA is constituted of areas of hills with laurisilva forest and macaronesean woodland. Also some peatland is included.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: One of the most important sites for the Azorean Wood Pigeon in all the archipelago.

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The habitat is highly threatened by the continuous destruction of the vegetation and the introduction of invasive species. There are no censuses of Azorean Wood Pigeon, thus the site was identified based on the quality and extent of the available habitat for the species.
