Site details

Site description: The KBA Laquipampa-Salas-Jayanca (LSJ) proposal covers the natural protected area of the Laquipampa Wildlife Refuge (RVSL), with a total area of 308.84 km². The altitude ranges from 200 to 2858 masl. It is located in the districts of Incahuasi in the province of Ferreñafe, and the districts of Salas and Jayanca in the province of Lambayeque, Department of Lambayeque. The most relevant habitats of the proposal are dry forest, desert scrub, and riverine scrub. The relief is varied, with the presence of ravines, hillsides and flat areas. The area is crossed by the Moyán river and the Sangana river, in the highlands of the Laquipampa hamlet, the La Leche river, for the lowlands of the Puchaca hamlet, and the Salas River in the highlands of the hamlets of Pilasca, Banco and Naranjo from the Salas district. The topography of the land in the Salas sector is very rugged and dangerous, with huge rocks and deep, dry ravines and few stony clearings where a primitive and subsistence farming system predominates in the hamlets, predominating medium and large trees and shrubs no greater than 5 m in height, as well as a highly varied herbaceous vegetation.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Laquipampa-Salas-Jayanca (LSJ) proposal is the core area for the unique population of the Andean bear that inhabits the Ecuatorial dry forest and then that triggers KBA status. This ursid is in a vulnerable state (VU) both globally and nationally, and activates the A1d criterion. Also meets the thresholds for the A1a criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs for Penelope albipennis and B2 criteria for four range-restricted birds: Atlapetes albiceps, Clibanornis erythrocephalus, Penelope albipennis and Syndactyla ruficollis.
Additional biodiversity: In the area, the presence of mammals such as ocelot "Leopardus pardalis", Northern Tiger Cat "Leopardus tigrinus", Pampas cat "Leopardus garleppi", jaguarundi "Herpailurus yagouaroundi", puma "Puma concolor", Sechuran fox "Lycalopex sechurae", tayra "Eira barbara", mountain paca "Cuniculus taczanowskii", opossum "Didelphis sp.", white-naped squirrel "Sciurus stramineus", and skunk "Conepatus semistriatus" have been evidenced by the SBC' camera traps. Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) and White-winged guan (Penelope albipennis) are present in the area too.
Manageability of the site: The proposal overlaps a protected natural area of 83.2958 km², the Laquipampa Wildlife Refuge, which is administered by the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the Peruvian state (SERNANP). A part of the remaining area is part of the San Francisco de Asis de Salas Rural Community and a private land. Currently, SBC has agreements with SERNANP and the San Francisco de Asis community to carry out long-term research and conservation activities inside and outside the protected area.
Supersedes another site: Laquipampa/14861
Other site values: No
Delineation rationale: The boundary of the Laquipampa-Salas-Jayanca KBA proposal was delineated through tracks, direct evidence, and ecological characteristics of the spectacled bear, as well as the natural topology of the area. To the north it limits with the Pilasca hamlet of the Salas district, to the southwest with the Pan de Azúcar hamlet of the Jayanca district, and to the southeast with the RVSL protected area and the buffer zone of the RVSL.
