Site details

Site description: The upper basin of the Piray Guazú stream, in addition to the lower parts, covers a sector on mountainous relief between the upper basins of the Piray Miní and Piray Guazú streams. It connects to the north with the block belonging to the area known as KBA Cuenca del Piray Miní (AR118), to the south with the KBA Montecarlo (AR125), thus constituting an important node that maintains the Green Corridor between the northern and southern forests. The topography is gently undulating in the higher sectors, becoming very steep in the stream valleys. The original native vegetation corresponds to the Paraná pine forest (Araucaria angustifolia). The list of arboreal plants contains as main species the yellow guatambú (Aspidosperma australe), ambay guazú or cacheta (Didymopanax morototoni), pindó (Syagrus romanzoffiana), caroba (Jacaranda micrantha), guayubira (Cordia americana), jacaratiá (Jacaratia spinosa) chachí bravo (Alsophila setosa), chachí manso (Dicksonia sellowiana) alecrín (Holocalyx balansae), cañafístola (Peltophorum dubium), anchico colorado (Parapiptadenia rigida), timbó (Enterolobium contortisiliquum), grapia (Apuleia leiocarpa), timbó blanco (Ateleia glazioveana), andsapuy (Machaerium stipitatum), burro caá (Casearia sylvestris), black laurel (Nectandra angustifolia), laurel guaicá (Ocotea puberula), white parrot (Bastardiopsis densiflora), cedar (Cedrela fissilis), cancharana (Cabralea canjerana), fig tree, canelón (Myrsine sp.), tacuapí (Merostachys claussenii), María preta (Diatenopteryx sorbifolia), aguay (Chrysophyllum gonocarpum), fumo bravo (Solanum granulosum-leprosum), ortiga brava (Urera sp.). Cruce Caballero Provincial Park is located 14 km northeast of the city of San Pedro and 6 km west of Paraje Cruce Caballero and National Route Nº 14. The park is located on a local watershed, with an undulating relief whose altitude varies between 520 and 634 masl, and is on the edge of a landscape mosaic composed of patches of jungle and small areas of crops and livestock. The park is crisscrossed by small streams that eventually drain into the Alegría stream to the west of the area. There is a waterfall in the southern corner and a small high marsh in the north. The vegetation corresponds to the laurel, guatambú and Paraná pine forest, one of the last relicts of this forest in a good state of conservation in Argentina; for decades this lot was used as a seedbed, taking advantage of the seeds of the Paraná pine for commercial plantations of the species in other properties. The Alegría Creek watershed (IBA AR119) occupies a large part of the Arauco S.A. property. The park was created in 1989 by Provincial Decree 242 and ratified in 1991 by Provincial Law No. 2876. It has a management plan whose recommendations, in general terms, have not been implemented. Populations of species of hunting interest such as the yacutinga (Pipile jacutinga), the solitaru tinamou (Tinamus solitarius), the Rusty-margined Guan (Penelope superciliaris) and different mammals have already disappeared or decreased. Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site is a KBA because it meets criteria A1b, and A1c, and A1d criteria, by the presence birds Celeus galeatus and Pipile jacutinga.
Additional biodiversity: There are 5 species (Fish) with restricted geographic distribution. The White-bearded Antshrike (Biatas nigropectus), Vulnerable, here has records from 2005 and it is estimated that this site could contain about 30 individuals (Bodrati & Cockle, 2006a). There are two taxonomic entities of fish, not yet described, which are restricted to the Piray Guazú basin. In 1989 a harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) nest was found in the Arroyo del Niño, one of the tributaries of the Piray Guazú, about 40 km from Eldorado. The solitary tinamou (Tinamus solitarius) and the White-browed Foliage-gleaner (Anabacerthia amaurotis) have also been recorded. In the Alegría Creek watershed, 255 bird species have been recorded. The Canebrake Groundcreeper (Clibanornis dendrocolaptoides) was frequently detected in different sectors, and the azure jay (Cyanocorax caeruleus) is found in small groups. The Araucaria Tit-spinetail (Leptasthenura setaria) is abundant in plantations of Parana pine and in forest areas where there are young specimens of this tree. The southern bristle-tyrant (Phylloscartes eximius) is common. In addition to the rusty-barred owl (Strix hylophila), the black banded owl (Strix huhula), the mottled owl (Strix virgata) and the tawny-browed owl (Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana) are also present, the latter being strikingly common. Ten species of caprimulgids have been recorded in the area, among which the long trained nightjar (Macropsalis forcipata) stands out. Four species of swifts are also present, including the great dusky swift (Cypseloides senex), which roosts in small groups in different waterfalls in the area. The Black-billed scythebil (Campyloramphus falcularius) was frequently recorded, and the great curassow (Notharchus swainsoni) was observed with chicks. Also recorded were the king vulture (Sarcoramphus papa), the lesser sandpiper (Selenidera maculirostris) and the Rufous-tailed Antthrush (Chamaeza ruficauda). In Cruce Caballero Provincial Park, more than 70 species of native trees have been identified, there are several specimens that reach an extraordinary development. Among them, we can mention the paraná pine (Araucaria angustifolia), the timbó (Enterolobium contortisiliquum), the alecrín (Holocalyx balansae), the yvyrá pytá (Peltophorum dubium), the ambay guazú (Didymopanax morototoni), the cedar (Cedrela fissilis), the cancharana (Cabaret), the cedar (Cedrela fissilis), the cancharana (Cabralea canjerana), the anchicos (Parapiptadenia rigida and Albizzia hassleri), the guatambú (Balfourodendron riedelianum), the guayaibí (Patagonula americana) and the laureles (Ocotea spp. and Nectandra spp.) Near the watercourses, there are important patches of chachí bravo (Cyatheaceae family), and in some places examples of the endangered chachí manso (Dicksonia sellowiana). Among the mammals, some 262 species have been recorded and there is one of the few protected populations in Argentina of the carayá brown howler monkey (Alouatta guariba). Species that require large territories, such as the tapir (Tapirus terrestris), also occasionally arrive from the Alegría stream valley. This park stands out for being one of the only two protected areas in Argentina with a regular presence of the vinaceous breasted amazon (Amazona vinacea). The park also harbors important populations of the yellow-browed woodpecker (Piculus aurulentus), the Araucaria tit-spinetail (Leptasthenura setaria), the Creamy-bellied Gnatcatcher (Polioptila lactea), the dwarf blue seedeater (Amaurospiza moesta) and the Southern Bristle-tyrant (Phylloscartes eximius). The Canebrake Groundcreeper (Clibanornis dendrocolaptoides) and the Sao Paulo tyrannulet (Phylloscartes paulista) are thought to have stable populations, although at low density. The little swallow tailed-cotinga (Phibalura flavirostris) was recorded in the winter of 2004. The green throated (Euphonia chalybea) is a regular occurrence and was observed in dense patches of chachí bravo on the stream near the operational area. The bare-throated bellbird (Procnias nudicollis) has been cited but its presence seems to be occasional or accidental in the area. The Azure jay (Cyanocorax caeruleus) has also been reported, although its populations are more dense in the periphery of the park. The yacutinga (Pipile jacutinga) seems to have been locally extinct for more than a decade. The great curassow (Notharcus swainsoni) is regularly present and nests in the area. The Shear-tailed Grey Tyrant (Muscipipra vetula) and the chestnut-backed tanager (Tangara preciosa) are also regularly observed and may be a resident population. In the surroundings of the area, there are important populations of the tufted curassow (Macropsalis forcipata). The Long-tufted Screech-owl (Otus sanctaecatarinae) was also found and the safron toucanet (Baillonius bailloni) is regular in winter in mixed flocks with the red breasted toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus). These species of importance to the site that do not meet the threshold or are not found in the WDKBA and are: Andromakhe tupi, Bryconamericus agna, Psalidodon troya, Rhamdella cainguae, Leopardus guttulus, Phrynops williamsi. Manageability of the site: In this KBA there are 6 areas dedicated to conservation, the Parque Provincial Cruce Caballero (522 ha), 3 Private Reserves: Tomo (1441 ha), Don Otto (321 ha), Julián Freaza (648 ha) and two High Conservation Value Areas, Bosque Nativo Piray - San Pedro (17,400 ha) and Valle del Arroyo Alegría (8,700 ha), these are not formal protected areas, but the owner company, Arauco Argentina, dedicates them to conservation. The whole of this KBA is under the figure of Integral Area of Conservation and Sustainable Development Green Corridor of the Province of Misiones.
Supersedes another site: Include: Alta Cuenta del arroyo Piray Guazu (19604), Alta cuenca del arroyo Alegria (19603) and Parque Provincial Cruce Caballero (19619)
Other site values: The Mbya Guaraní Tekoá Arandú community and others are settled on a 5,000 ha lot that used to be a former tax exemption on the Victoria stream.
Delineation rationale: The northwest coincides with the private property divisions. The northern boundary of one sector coincides with Provincial Route 17, and is also partly a property boundary. The remainder of the northern boundary arises from private property boundaries, containing the remaining forests, incorporating two sub-basins of tributaries that run east of Provincial Route 20 and the J. Freaza Private Reserve. In two sections, this sector of the northern boundary coincides with Provincial Route 17. In the northeastern vertex, a group of small properties that still preserve patches of forest and the headwaters of the Piray Guazú stream were incorporated. In the Southeast and South boundary, the entire area of the Area of High Conservation Value (AAVC) Native Forest Piray - San Pedro, belonging to the company Arauco Argentina, was incorporated, following its boundary, which also includes the headwaters of the San Pedro and Tigre streams, tributaries of the Piray Guazú. On the western boundary, the limits of the private properties were followed.
