Site details

Site description: The landscape is undulating, with remnants of Mixed Laurel and Guatambú forests composed of discontinuous fragments, close together, structured in three strata, with a predominance of Fabaceae species; Capueras composed of Baccharis, Threma micrantha, Cecropia pachystachya and Solanum sp. species; Marginal Forest where Guadua chacoensis is dominant; Hygrophilous Scrublands and Mesophilous Scrublands, both transformed into cattle ranches and yerba mate fields. The forest is made up of a variety of species, including: Marginal Forest where Guadua chacoensis is dominant; Hygrophilous Grasslands and Mesophilous Grasslands, both of which have been transformed into cattle ranches and yerba mate plantations. Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a KBA because of the presence of the fish species Gymnogeophagus jaryi. According to the IUCN Red List this species is categorized as endangered (EN) and triggers KBA criterion A1a.
Additional biodiversity: The caraguatá (Dyckia niederleinii) has a collection locality of 1918 in this site and is one of the 7 known globally restricted to an ecoregion (Smith & Downs (1974). The sapling (Randia brevituba), Endangered and restricted in distribution, was collected in 1946 (Judkevich et al., 2016). The helmeted woodpecker (Celeus galeatus), Vulnerable, has citations up to 2002 and it is estimated that in this KBA there could be about 9 individuals (Krauczuk, 2008, Lammertink et al., 2012, MAyDS & AA, 2017). The Temminck's Seedeater(Sporophila falcirostris), Vulnerable, was recorded in 2006 with 5 individuals. It would be harbored at the site as a refuge, as it is a species specialized in bamboo seeds and large flocks and breeding of this species, are associated with Guadua bamboo flowering events (two species), approximately every 30 years, at this site. (Areta et al., 2009, Areta et al., 2013, Krauczuk, 2008, Diego Isaldo, XC18435. Accessible at www.xeno-canto.org/18435). Southern tiger cat (Leopardus guttulus), Vulnerable, was detected until 2019 and it is estimated that this KBA could contain about 12 individuals (based on Cruz et al., 2019b, Dr. Paula Cruz, pers. comm.). For this site, 272 bird species have been detected, among them stand out for having some degree of threat or having insufficient data at a national scale: Penelope superciliaris, Spizaetus melanoleucus, Pionopsitta pileata, Thalurania furcata, Ramphastos dicolorus, Piculus aurulentus, Campephilus robustus, Hypoedaleus guttatus, Hylopezus nattereri, Sclerurus scansor, Campyloramphus falcularius, Philydor lichtensteini, Phyllomyias burmeisteri, Pyroderus scutatus, Cyanocorax caeruleus, Polioptila lactea, Donacospiza albifrons, Amaurospiza moesta, Euphonia chalybea. The high specific richness and the presence of 59 families of birds are related to the heterogeneity of the landscape, the maintenance of a relatively continuous forest structure, the presence of forest fragments close to each other or linked by woodlands, wooded areas and forests (Krauczuk, E. R. (2008). Specific richness, abundance and environments of the birds of Corpus Christi, San Ignacio, Misiones, Argentina. Lundiana, 9(1), 29-39.)"
Under the Native Forest Law, within this site, there is no red or yellow zone, all remnants of forest were classified as green zones.
Delineation rationale: The limits of this KBA follow the following criteria: to contain the localities with the habitat of threatened or geographically restricted species, to include part of the Ñacanguazú stream basin and its associated marginal forests, to give it structural continuity with the Tabay and Ñacanguazú Basins KBA and, finally, to incorporate the Corpus Ichthyic Reserve. Always following the cadastral limits. The southern boundary is drawn, following these property divisions, trying to contain the remnants of forests and excluding the urbanized areas of the towns of Corpus and Santo Pipó, until it connects with the adjacent KBA. The northeastern boundary follows the same logic up to the coast of the Paraná River. The northwestern limit follows the coast of this river to the mouth of the Santo Pipó stream where it enters the river to follow the limit of the Corpus Ichthyic Reserve, coinciding with the international border. At the southwest end of the KBA, it returns to the mainland following the border of this reserve.
