Site description: Lakes surrounded by arable land, in the lower valley of the River Danube near the town of Izmail.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The total number of breeding waterbirds is 30,000 pairs, with more than 70,000 individuals staging here during migration.
