Site details

Site description: The island of Coll lies in the Inner Hebrides of western Scotland, west of Mull in Argyll and Bute. The IBA lies towards the south-west of the island. It includes areas of agricultural hay meadows, silage fields, pasture, arable fields, marsh, Iris beds and rock outcrops. It is important for breeding Crex crex.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: First identified as part of Tiree and Coll in 1989; this larger site was split into four separate component SPA/IBAs in 2007. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
