Site details
Site description: Atoll corallien situé à 500 km à l’Est de Tahiti et distant de 70 km de Anaa (dont il dépend administrativement). C'est le sixième plus grand atoll des Tuamotu. Allongé sur 50 km d’Ouest en Est et large de 20 km, son lagon communique avec l’océan par trois passes rapprochées qui s’ouvrent dans la partie occidentale de l’anneau corallien. Découverte par Domingo de Boenechea en 1774, l’île fut peu sollicitée pendant la période coloniale. Elle livra un peu de nacre jusqu’en 1960 et la cocoteraie y est aujourd'hui inexploitée. Il n'y a pas de population permanente mais les habitants de l'île de Faaite s'y rendent occasionnelement.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. Bird-only KBA listed in the CEPF Ecosystem Profile of the Polynesia-Micronesia Hotspot (2007), based on Acrocephalus caffer (VU); however, this taxon was not listed as a trigger species for this IBA in Raust and Sanford (2007).
Delineation rationale: 2012-12-17 (BL Secretariat): original polygon clipped to hi-res coastline (marine areas removed) following identification in October 2012 of new marine IBA offshore this site; site area consequently changed from 64877 ha to 2121 ha.
