Site details

Site description: The KBA contains 5 distinctive habitats: savanna, treed savanna (cerrado), forest islands, gallery forests and marsh wetlands, this region has eight months of flooding -from November to July- followed by four months of extreme drought -from July to November. About seventeen species of macaws, in addition to Ara glaucogularis, inhabit the reserve. Calidris subruficollis (categorized as near threatened) and other shorebirds (Calidris melanotos, Bartramia longicauda and Pluvialis dominica) stop in this area on their southbound migration to feed; however, during the northbound migration season the area is in its flood stage, so they continue their journey to the plains of Colombia and Venezuela. Other birds, among the 320 species that are sighted in the area, include
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. Trigger species: Alectrurus tricolor A1d; Coryphaspiza melanotis A1d; Culicivora caudacuta A1d; Ara glaucogularis A1a, A1c, B1.
Additional biodiversity: This site receive yearly several migrant birds species, although their numbers do not reach the minimun to trigger the Criteria D, they are: Actitis macularius, Bartramia longicauda, Calidris fuscicollis, Calidris himantopus, Calidris melanotos, Calidris minutilla, Calidris subruficollis, Charadrius collaris, Charadrius semipalmatus, Gallinago paraguaiae, Himantopus mexicanus, Phalaropus tricolor, Pluvialis dominica, Tringa flavipes, Tringa melanoleuca, Tringa solitaria, Vanellus cayanus, Vanellus chilensis. Oher species of conservation concern are present in the KBA, though there are no current information about theri reproductive popualtions: Pteronura brasiliensis, Blastocerus dichotomus, Inia geoffrensis, Priodontes maximus, Tayassu pecari, Tapirus terrestris, Myrmecophag tridactyla, and Cebus unicolor.
Manageability of the site: The KBA does not have any current form of management. However, due to the interest of the Departmental Government on KBAs it is possible in the future to foster its conservation and management. Mevertheless, Asociación Armonía is working with cattle ranchers' associations to promote sustainable or environmentally responsible management practices and the conservation of local bird species, particularly the blue-bearded parrot and migratory birds. A workshop was recently held with ranchers and other stakeholders in the area precisely to link these practices and collaborate with biodiversity conservation.
Delineation rationale: The delimitation of the KBA, the limits were considered to the west following the municipal boundary with the Municipality of Santa Rosa, to the north it limits with the KBA Lagos de Exaltación (100314), to the east the Mamoré River and upstream the Apere River.
