Site details
Site description: A mountainous area with well-preserved fir-beech forests, especially the Corkova uvala primeval forest. Meadows and pastures are numerous in the southern part of the area (Homoljacko polje, Vrhovinsko polje, Brezovac and Babin potok). This is an important nesting area for Ural Owl, Tengmalm’s Owl, Three-toed Woodpecker and White-backed Woodpecker. The main threats are intensified forest management, changes in traditional farming and unregulated recreational activities and tourism.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: Area changed from 31341 ha to 29685 ha, as part of 2010 revision of IBAs/proposed SPAs.
