Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: Sükümbet Gölü (SitRecID 9633) was proposed in BirdLife 2001 Ramsar Shadow List publication, but then in 2004 merged with a part of Van Gölü [site listed in 1997/2000 IBA inventory] (SitRecID 832; 390,000 ha) to form the new site Bendimahi Deltası (SitRecID 24309) (Kiliç & Eken 2004).
