Site description: The KBA Cordillera de Colán covers an area of 1468.899 sq km and it's located within the provinces of Bagua, Utcubamba and Bongará in the department of Amazonas. The altitude range of the KBA Cordillera de Colán is 700-3600 masl. The main climate types in the KBA Cordillera de Colán are: 1) Temperate, rainy with abundant humidity all seasons of the year; the maximum temperature ranges from 25°C to 29°C, the minimum temperature ranges from 11°C to 17°C and the annual precipitation ranges from 1200 to 3000 mm. Other climate type present in small proportion at this KBA is: 2) Temperate, very rainy with abundant humidity all seasons of the year. The KBA Cordillera de Colán presents the following ecosystems: "Bosque montano de Yunga", "Bosque altimontano (Pluvial) de Yunga", "Bosque basimontano de Yunga", "Jalca" and "Vegetación Secundaria".
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Cordillera de Colán qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. The KBA Colán Mountain Range harbors two threatened plants (Gynoxys colanensis and Solanum humectophilum), three threatened primates, the Vulnerable Andean bear Tremarctos ornatus, two range restricted frogs (Telmatobius colanensis and Pristimantis cuneirostris) and seven range restricted bird species.

Manageability of the site: Since different important areas are located within the KBA Cordillera de Colán: Cordillera de Colán National Sanctuary, Chayu Nain Communal Reserve, Copallín Private Conservation Area and Cerro El Adobe Fragile Ecosystem, this KBA can be managed by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP and the Regional Government of Amazonas.
