Site details


Site description: This site contains some of the highest quality blanket bog in Shetland, in addition to many pools and acid lochans, some with small islands. The important tree and scrub cover comprises Betula, Sorbus, Salix and Juniperus, and numerous Arctic-alpine species characterize the flora and invertebrate fauna. The IBA holds an important assemblage of breeding moorland birds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: First identified as North Roe in 1989; renamed as North Roe and Tingon, Mainland Shetland in 1992; renamed again in 2007. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale. Additional area added on 1:50,000 maps.
