Site details

Site description: A drowned valley that forms one of the largest natural harbours in the world, with the five islands representing high ground between the former river valleys. Habitat-types include mudflats, saltmarsh, reed Phragmites-swamp and heathland. The IBA is important for wintering wildfowl and waders, and for breeding gulls and terns.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: First identified as part of Poole Basin IBA in 1989; Poole Harbour split out in 1992, and extended in 2000 to include Wareham Meadows; 2007 adopted SPA boundary. 2000 area, 5130. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
