Site details


Site description: The area is characterized by upland heather and grass moorland, and includes 19 peaks over 400 m with the highest, Snaefell, standing at 621 m. The hills run north-east to south-west, and are divided by a central valley formed by the Rivers Dhoo and Neb. The site holds important numbers of breeding upland species and Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
