Site details


Site description: An archipelago of small islands and islets, of volcanic origin, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of Sicily. The islands are Alicudi, Filicudi, Salina, Lipari, Vulcano, Panarea, Basiluzzo, Lisca Bianca, and Stromboli. The main habitats are maquis, rocky areas and garrigue. The principal land-uses are agriculture and tourism.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important area for breeding Calonectris diomedea and falcons Falco.
