Site details
Site description: Vast wetland complex comprising three large marshes and bogs, interspersed by partially drained and canalized flood-plains of the Aiviekste river and its tributaries. Listed as an IBA since 1994 [6, 7, 1], with the boundaries and the former site name 'Baltie Klani marshes and bogs' modified repeatedly. Partially protected: there is a 76.8% overlap with four restricted nature reserves and candidate SPAs: Lagazu - Snitkas bog, Berzpils bog, Salas bog, and Parabaine. A large part of the unprotected area is covered by flood-plain grasslands
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
