Site details
Site description: Becejski ribnjak covers both the fishpond and adjacent network of watercourses which includes Stara Tisa, Veliki Bački canal, Beljanska swamp and parts of Tisa and Krivaja rivers. This flat area is situated within municipality borders of Novi Becej, Becej, Srbobran and Žabalj in the central parts of Backa district. The heart of area represents large carp fishpond was established in 1968 and covers 680 ha and Veliki Backi canal excavated during end of XVIII century in former causeway of Black River. IBA is surrounded with 8 settlements and thousands of hectares of agricultural fields.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: 2014-10-14 (BL Secretariat): following Puzović (2009), site area changed from 4000 ha to 4807 ha; coordinates changed from 45.583N 20.05E to 45°31'55'N 20°5'20'E.
