Site details


Site description: Prokletije are an impressive mountain massif of the Dinaric mountains in the Balkan Peninsula, stretching over three countries (Serbia, Albania, Montenegro), with 150 peaks over 2.000 m in altitude. The IBA is situated in the region of Kosovo and Metohija, within the municipalities of Peć, Dečani and Đakovica. It is characterized by numerous steep rocky slopes with scarce vegetation, gorges and canyons and vast alpine pastures with creeping pines, as well as glacial lakes, of which 5 are located on Đeravica (2.656 m), the highest peak in Serbia.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: 2014-10-14 (BL Secretariat): following Puzović (2009), site area changed from 100000 ha to 106661 ha; coordinates changed from 42.717N 20.167E to 42°45'24'N 20°17'49'E.
