Site details


Site description: A large open raised bog, largely unaffected by drainage, with small lakes and several forested islands. Area encompasses parts of the surrounding forests, including the largest natural stand of European Hornbeam Carpinus betulus in Latvia. Listed in all previous IBA inventories since 1994 [4, 5, 1]. Almost fully protected: there is a 99.7% overlap with Dunika restricted nature reserve, a candidate SPA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
