Site details
Site description: The site is part of a remote forest area between Abava and Venta largely unaffected by drainage and intensive logging. It is covered by predominantly coniferous forests with several small streams, beaver ponds and peat bogs. Listed as an IBA since 1994 [2, 3, 1], with the total area gradually decreasing. High protection level: there is a 75.5% overlap mostly with two restricted nature reserves, Venta valley and Mangene forest, a candidate SPA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
