Site description: The site comprises predominantly deciduous forests between the Ruja and Seda rivers on the NE coast of lake Burtnieks and two patches of open fields and meadows on both flanks. A new site formed by the reduction of the former lake Burtnieks IBA, listed since 2000 [3, 1]. High protection level: there is a 95.6% overlap with Vidusburtnieks restricted nature reserve, a candidate SPA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
