Site details
Site description: Parcel I of Andohahela National Park is located 84 km north-east of Tolagnaro. It includes a portion of the mountainous massif of Beampingaratra, oriented north–south, and five peaks above 1,500 m. The main river rising in the parcel is the Mandrare, augmented by the waters from its two tributaries, the Mananara and the Manambolo. In the east, the Manampanihy and Andriambe rivers flow respectively towards the north-east and the south-east. The vegetation is composed of low- and mid-altitude, dense, humid evergreen forest, dominated by trees of Tambourissa, Symphonia and Dalbergia, although the steep slopes are dominated by Lauraceae, Compositae, Rubiaceae and Convolvulaceae. Tree-ferns and orchids are common, and epiphytic cacti Rhipsalis also occur. Threats include slash-and-burn cultivation, burning of pastures, exploitation of wood, and hunting, especially of lemurs.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site contains the entire known populations of three amphibians (Anodonthyla jeanbai, Boophis haingana, and Boophis miadana) and the Fleurete's Sportive Lemur (Lepilemur fleuretae) . The amphibians Aglyptodactylus australis and Spinomantis microtis meet A1a/B2 and the birds Rufous-headed Ground-roller (Atelornis crossleyi), Pitta-like Ground-roller (Atelornis pittoides), Madagascar Yellowbrow (Crossleyia xanthophrys), Yellow-bellied Sunbird-asity (Neodrepanis hypoxantha), and Velvet Asity (Philepitta castanea) meet B2. An additional 29 birds, 23 plants, ten reptiles, nine invertebrates, eight amphibians, four mammals, and one fish meet legacy KBA criteria and are in need of reassessment against the Global Standard.
Manageability of the site: This site is managed by Madagascar National Parks.
Delineation rationale: This site was originally delineated during a previous IBA process. The delineation corresponds to a previous delimitation of Andohahela National Park - Section I.
