Site details
Site description: A 10 km wide volcanic crater situated west of Lake Van (site 096). Three crater lakes are surrounded by low scrub; the cliffs of the crater walls reach 690 m above the crater floor. Nemrut lake (1,250 ha; 150 m deep) is largely unvegetated, is fed by springs and snowmelt, and freezes in winter. Ilýca lake (30 ha; 8 m deep) is fed by hot springs and supports reedbeds (Phragmites). Domestic stock graze the flatter parts of the crater.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Gyps fulvus also breeds.
Delineation rationale: Area changed from 4500 ha [in 1997/2000 IBA inventory] to 33,490 ha; new area encompasses Nemrut Gölü (Kiliç & Eken 2004).
