Site details
Site description: This IBA include an area of forest shown on recent forest cover maps in a range of hills in northern Sorsogon Province, close to the border with Albay. The hills only rise to just over 1,000 m, so the forest is mainly lowland, with limited areas of montane forest around the highest peaks. Most forest in this area is reported to have been logged over in the past. Bacon-Manito is currently the site of a NAPOCOR Geothermal Power Project.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas) KBA identified in the CI/CEPF Conservation Outcomes booklet for the Philippines Hotspot (2006). Taxonomy, nomenclature and threat category follow the 2004 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: There are only a few records of the threatened or restricted-range birds of the Luzon Endemic Bird Area in the general area around this poorly known site, but on the basis of the habitats present it could prove to support a similar avifauna to that of Mt Bulusan (PH035).
