Site description: The KBA Amarakaeri covers an area of 6169.616 sq km and it's located in Peru, in the department of Madre de Dios, province of Manu, districts of Madre de Dios, Manu, Fitzcarrald and Huepetuhe, and a little portion in the department of Cusco, provinces of Quispicanchi and Paucartambo. This KBA is located in the Madre de Dios and Colorado river basins. It comprises a very vast area with a high physiographic variety, with terraces, hills and mountains and several floors of high and low jungle, with a great variety of ecosystems and microclimates that provide refuge to a large number of species of fauna and flora, many of them endangered. The altitude range of the KBA Amarakaeri is 303 - 2704 masl. The climate types varies from very humid semi-warm to warm-humid. The temperature ranges between 25° and 38°. The annual precipitation varies between 2,480 mm and 3,810 mm. The KBA Amarakaeri presents the following ecosystems: "Bosque de terraza no inundable", "Bosque basimontano de Yunga", "Bosque de colina alta", "Bosque aluvial inundable", "Bosque altimontano (Pluvial) de Yunga", "Pantano de palmeras", "Bosque montano de Yunga", "Pacales" and rivers.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Amarakaeri qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets the B1,2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs for seven range restricted birds (Picumnus subtilis, Poecilotriccus albifacies, Poecilotriccus pulchellus, Grallaria albigula, Laniisoma buckleyi, Myiothlypis chrysogaster and Phlogophilus harterti).

Manageability of the site: The KBA Amarakaeri is a Communal Reserve which has entered the Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), for constituting a model of participatory management and sustainable development. The KBA Amarakaeri is a protected natural area co-managed by the State represented by National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State - SERNANP and the Executor of the Amarakaeri Administration Contract (ECA Amarakaeri) with the objective of protecting the sources of the Eori/Madre de Dios and Karene/Colorado rivers (https://amarakaeri.org/reserva-comunal-amarakaeri).

Delineation rationale: The boundary corresponds to the Amarakaeri communal reserve and its buffer zone. To the northwest, it follows the limits of the Manu Biosphere Reserve and the Q'eros Kosñipata Regional Conservation Area.
