Site details
Site description: Forested hills south of Lake Kerkini. Fagus forest dominates at higher altitudes and Quercus on the lower slopes.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: This is an important IBA for breeding and passage raptors and breeding forest passerines. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (2-4 resident individuals), Aquila heliaca (passage), Falco naumanni (passage).
