Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1a,b, and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. This KBA harbors range restricted lizard Liolaemus poconchilensis and aquatic frog Telmatobius peruvianus, also harbors the range restricted birds Conirostrum tamarugense and Upucerthia albigula.

Manageability of the site: The KBA Sama-Miculla could be managed by the Regional Government of Tacna (https://www.gob.pe/regiontacna) because it has the capacity to establish Regional Conservation Areas. Awareness campaigns could be conducted for owners of agricultural fields, along with providing alternative sustainable production methods. The National Coordination Group of KBAs has a conservation promotion and monitoring committee, which is composed of various governmental and civil society institutions that will work to promote conservation actions in the KBAs.
Other site values: Ataspaca rural community
Delineation rationale: The boundaries of this KBA follow less disturbed arid areas at lower elevations in the southwest and higher elevation areas in the northeast. To the north, this KBA follows the boundaries of the Pachia district, to the west, it follows the boundary of the Ciudad Nueva district, to the east, it crosses the Vilcurtani and Cobani ravines, and to the south, it borders the city of Tacna. The areas most affected by agriculture were removed from the polygon. Trigger birds could be found in the patches of forest between the cultivated fields and may move between these patches, so we consider that the species continues to use the area.
