Site details


Site description: A hilly coastal region dominated at higher altitudes by conifer forest. At lower altitudes there is a mosaic of maquis, small wetlands and olive-groves.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important area for breeding and passage raptors and resident forest species.

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Logging of the Pinus nigra forest is a major threat, particularly to large raptors. Other threats include tourism developments along the coast, spreading urbanization, and hunting. A management plan has existed since 1996. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
