Site details


Site description: Mounts Tzena and Pinovo form the central part of the Aridaia mountain range. The vegetation comprises extensive broadleaved forests and alpine and subalpine grassland. The site lies adjacent to site 009 in the FYR Macedonia.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important breeding and foraging site for raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aquila heliaca (non-breeding).

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The main threats are from hunting, the afforestation of abandoned cultivation and grassland with plantations of Robinia pseudacacia, and intensified forest management. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
