Site details
Site description: The easternmost island of the Cyclades. A rugged, rocky island, including Mount Krikelos. The south-east of the island has steep cliffs. Vegetation cover includes scrub, maquis, phrygana and remnant Quercus forest. A number of rocky islets fall within the site. Human activities include livestock-farming, tourism, fishing, and hunting.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is important for breeding and passage raptors, and species associated with cliffs and scrub.
