Site details
Site description: A freshwater lake located south-east of the city of Groningen, with reedbeds and an extensive area of wet pasture. Human activities include reed-harvesting.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Lake Zuidlaardermeer is used as a roost by swans Cygnus and geese Anser.
Delineation rationale: 9 March 2017: name and area edited. Now equal to the designated Special Protection Area (Birds Directive).

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Nutrient pollution of the lake is a problem (`Other' threat, above). A compensation scheme is in place for those farmers affected by restrictions on agricultural practices.
