Site details


Site description: Branch of the Khvalynskaya delta of Volga river - system of the little salt and fresh lakes. Due to artificial irrigationdrainage which exists here most of the lakes have an irregular circle of flooding, part of them are offen shallow -water or dry. On the Volgograd part of the lake-sytem (northern lakes) there are a lot of artificial ponds are working, situation on Kalmykiya part is more close to the native.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Total number of waders (including Ruff) reach 20000-25000 individuals.
Delineation rationale: 2009-08-06: IBA area changed from 450,000 ha to 200,415 ha (by BL Secretariat, following RBCU spreadsheet of changes that need making). 2014-08-12 (BL Secretariat): centroid coords adjusted to 47°50'19'N 44°54'8'E and site area changed to (or confirmed as) 200415 ha (rounded), on basis of refined polygon downloaded from Spatial Database on Important Bird Areas of Russia 2014 (© Russian Bird Conservation Union, © Transparent World).
