Site details

Site description: Central part of the eastern submountain od Dagestan. Sites are located between 300 and 1247 m in high. Mosaic of the broadleaved forestst, srubs and steppes patches.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: 2008-03-28: In 2002 former boundaries of official SPA (Kayakentski Zakaznik) had been changed: former Kayakentski Zakaznik (27300 ha - see UNEP World SPA database) was divided into two Zakazniks. One - with the same name, but with lesser area (15000 ha), and another - on the former lands of part of 'old' Kayakentski Zakazni with new name Deshlagarski (14500 ha). After field researches in 2006-2007 author decided to reduce IBA up to 15000 ha - in the new boundaries of Kayakentsi reserve and excledy 14500 of Deshlagarski Zakaznik from IBA. 2009-08-17: IBA area changed from 27,300 ha to 14,500 ha (by BL Secretariat, following RBCU spreadsheet of changes that need making). 2014-08-12 (BL Secretariat): centroid coords adjusted to 42°20'36'N 47°48'41'E and site area changed to (or confirmed as) 14500 ha (rounded), on basis of refined polygon downloaded from Spatial Database on Important Bird Areas of Russia 2014 (© Russian Bird Conservation Union, © Transparent World).
