Site details


Site description: Slano Kopovo represents one of the best preserved saline ponds in the country. It is an invaluable hotspot for biodiversity and a unique example of saline habitats, which are on the verge of extinction in the country. The IBA is situated in the vicinity of town Novi Bečej and Tisa river, and it comprises of landscape entities such as the reserve Slano Kopovo, fishpond Ostrovo (350 ha), which are remnants of old meanders of the Tisa river, DTD irrigation canal and others.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: 2014-10-14 (BL Secretariat): following Puzović (2009), site area changed from 2660 ha to 9344 ha; coordinates changed from 45.617N 20.217E to 45°36'15'N 20°16'52'E.
