Site details
Site description: A 45-km reach of the River Danube between Dunaszekcsõ and the Serbian border, including Béda-Karapancsa and Riha lake. Both permanently flooded and well-drained flood-plains support ancient forests, plantations, backwaters and reedbeds (Phragmites). Human activities include fishing, angling, navigation and hunting.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: An important area for wintering geese and diving ducks (Anatidae). Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (2-4 pairs).

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: River traffic is heavy on this reach of the Danube, and causes problems of disturbance to birds, and damage to the river channel itself through dredging and canalization.
