Site details


Site description: An area of well-drained lowland overlain by meadow, saline and sandy soils, situated between the Gerje and Körös streams south-west of the town of Szolnok. Saline grassland covers the majority of the IBA, interspersed by arable land, orchards, small saline lakes and abandoned rice-fields. Human activities include grazing, haymaking, arable farming, horticulture, fish-farming and hunting.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important area for lowland farmland birds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (4-5 wintering birds), Otis tarda (1-12 breeding individuals).

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The main threats are the drainage of wetlands, and disturbance to birds caused by hunting and other human activities. Wetland restoration works have been implemented, and the site is a proposed LPA.
