Site details

Site description: This site corresponds to the Isiboro Sécure Indigenous Territory and National Park, located in the northern border of the Department of Cochabamba with the Departament of Beni. Ecologically this site is formed mainly by sub andean amazonian forests, Yungas or mountain cloud forests, and flooded savannas in the lowlands. Its climate is predominantely warm and rainy, in fact near the site is found one of the most humid regions in Bolivia, reaching up to 5000 to 7000 mm of precipitation. The landscape is shaped by two main rivers, the Isiboro and the Secure rivers. At the west margin of the site starts the foot hills of the tropical Andes, which is a series of paralell mountain ranges runing from northwest to southeast of the site. Inside the area can be found agricultural and livestock properties mainly owned by migrant communities from the high andes or the interandean dry valleys of Bolivia.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. KBA identified in the CEPF Ecosystem Profile of the Tropical Andes Hotspot (2015). Trigger species: Pauxi unicornis A1a, A1c
Additional biodiversity: Other threatened species of special concern are present in the site, although we lack of estimates of their populations and some of them also need and update of their IUCN assessment to correct their geographic range, this site holds their most western/southern populations: Blastocerus dichotomus, Pteronura brasiliensis, Tapirus terrestris, Tayassu pecari, Inia goeffrensis, Podocnemis expansa, and Podocnemis unifilis.
Manageability of the site: This site is embedded in the Isiboro Sécure Indigenous Territory and National Park, which is under the management of the Servicio Nacional de Áreas Protegidas de Bolivia “SERNAP”, therefore, the present KBA can also be managed as a unit.
Other site values: Yuracaré Indigenous People and Quechua descendants that colonized and formed some communities.
Delineation rationale: The Kba follows the boundaries of Isiboro Sécure Indigenous Territory and National Park
