Site details
Site description: It is located in the northeastern part of the department of Santa Cruz, in the José Manuel Velasco province, and borders the southwestern limit of the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park. Created by Supreme Decree No 22024, the Alto Paraguá area boasts varied vegetation, as does its physiography. On the other hand, it has unique faunal resources, in addition to other resources such as water and geological resources, without detracting from the scenic beauty of its multifaceted landscapes. It includes humid subtropical jungle, gallery forests, Cerrado, pampas, aquatic environments, rocky cliffs and beautiful waterfalls.
Se encuentra en la parte nororiental del departamento de Santa Cruz, en la provincia José Manuel Velasco, y colinda con el límite suroccidental del Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado. Creada mediante el Decreto Supremo No 22024, la zona del Alto Paraguá ostenta una vegetación variada, al igual que su fisiografía. Por otra parte, posee recursos faunísticos únicos en su género, además de otros recursos como los hídricos y geológicos, sin desmerecer la belleza escénica de sus multifacéticos parajes. Comprende selva subtropical húmeda, bosques de galería, cerrado, pampas, medios acuáticos, farallones rocosos y hermosas cataratas.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying Key Biodiversity Areas. Trigger species Sporophila nigrorufa A1b.
Manageability of the site: The KBA does not have any current form of management.
Delineation rationale: Site delineation first considered the trigger species’ occurrence records provided by experts and collaborating institutions. Experts then discussed the species occupation according to those records in the site, their altitudinal ranges and the extent of the species’ main habitats/ecosystems, to define the final boundaries of the site.
