Site details

Site description: Area located on the Caspian shore on the border of Dagestan and Kalmyk regions. In inventory 1995 RU172 and RU178 were identified as different IBAs. But by moment RU178 (Island) is below the Caspian sea level, so more carefull to merge Ru172 and Ru178 in one IBA (RU178 SHOULD BE DELETED FROM DATABASE).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: 2007 (BL Secretariat): The 1989/2000 IBA Morskoy Biryuchek Island (SitRecID 1494) has been submerged by the rising Caspian Sea, hence it has been merged into the surrounding IBA Kizlyar Bay (SitRecID 1496). 2009-08-04: IBA area changed from 50,000 ha to 122,200 ha (by BL Secretariat, following RBCU spreadsheet of changes that need making). 2014-08-12 (BL Secretariat): centroid coords adjusted to 44°35'43'N 46°56'12'E, on basis of refined polygon downloaded from Spatial Database on Important Bird Areas of Russia 2014 (© Russian Bird Conservation Union, © Transparent World).
