Site details
Site description: An area of agricultural land which has been replaced by steppe during the last 10-12 years as agricultural use has ceased.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: 2009-08-06: IBA area changed from 35,000 ha to 72,290 ha (by BL Secretariat, following RBCU spreadsheet of changes that need making). 2014-08-12 (BL Secretariat): centroid coords adjusted to 51°3'50'N 47°39'13'E and site area changed to (or confirmed as) 72290 ha (rounded), on basis of refined polygon downloaded from Spatial Database on Important Bird Areas of Russia 2014 (© Russian Bird Conservation Union, © Transparent World).
Habitats
Summary of habitats in KBA: The Saratov region is potentially one of the most important producers of oil in the lower Volga area of Russia, and exploratory drilling in the IBA has commenced. If large reserves are discovered, as seems likely, the IBA will be gravely threatened by the large-scale development of oil-extraction infrastructure and associated settlements, etc.
