Site details

Site description: Since Tokyo Bay had sandy shallows for a good distance from the shore, its reclamation has been carried out. The reclaimed ground was once utilized for factories, but then they have been replaced by office buildings and high rise residences as a result of redevelopment. A campaign to conserve the few natural tidal flats including Sanbanse has been set up. The tidal flats are in the inner Tokyo Bay and include the Tamagawa river estuary, Sanmaisu (Tokyo), Sanbanse (Chiba), Shiohama (Chiba) and Yatsu-kigata (Chiba).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
