Site details

Site description: Thirteen medium and small-sized rivers flow into Fukushimagata in Niigata Prefecture. Fukushimagata functions as flood control, and its water flows to the Japan Sea through artificial watercourses. There are vast reed beds around Fukushimagata, and paddy fields are found as far as you can see the area. It is the northern limit of the Euryale ferox habitat. About 450 kinds of plants including aquatic plants and hydorphytes such as Monochoria korsakowii and Sparganium erectum are observed.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
