Site details


Site description: The site is located in a basin surrounded by Chugoku mountains at an elevation of about 300 m above sea level. Paddy fields are expanded to the foot of the mountains. The site is the only area visited by wintering Hooded Cranes in Honshu. As such, the site is designated as a Special Natural Monument together with Izumi City in Kagoshima Prefecture.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
