Site details

Site description: The site is located in the southwest of Hokkaido. The Yurappukawa river is 30 km long and has its sources in Mt Yurappudake and Mt Futorodake. The rivers have no dam nor barrier to control soil erosion along the area, so salmons come up some river tributaries. Because of the forest clearance, mainly of Fagus crenata, the quantity of water is decreasing.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
