Site details


Site description: Mawarizeki and Sunazawa reservoirs, which are located in the west of Aomori Prefecture, are agricultural ones surrounded by apple farms and rice paddies. The banks are reinforced by Phragmites australis, Salix and cement blocks as well. The reservoirs are nearly full of water in spring, and it is drained in autumn. The whole surface is frozen in winter.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
