Site details

Site description: Area located almost in the central part of the Kola peninsula.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The IBA should possibly be larger including more [area than territory of Ponoysky Zakaznik], but insufficient data are currently availble to justify this. Also A3 criteria could be applied as the number of A3 species is defenetly high, but no speific counts have been made in previous years. To obtain further information, surveys are needed, but this is currently unfeasable as the area is located far from any roads and helicopter would be the only access route, thus very expensive.
Delineation rationale: 2014-08-12 (BL Secretariat): centroid coords adjusted to 67°17'27'N 37°24'35'E and site area changed to (or confirmed as) 277060 ha (rounded), on basis of refined polygon downloaded from Spatial Database on Important Bird Areas of Russia 2014 (© Russian Bird Conservation Union, © Transparent World).
