Site details

Site description: The site formed on the borderline of plains and hilly districts in the northern part of Miyagi Prefecture. Lake Izunuma and Uchinuma, the lake used to be a vast wetland between hilly districts, and, after some reclamation projects, the lake has taken the present form. Phragmites australis and others grow thickly in the marsh. There are some Salix forests along the riverbank in the lake area and on the heaps of earth and sand brought by floods. The environment mainly comprises wetlands and forests near the riversides. Before registering under the Ramsar Convention, paddy fields in Shiratori district that lie next to Lake Kabukurinuma have been restored to being part of the lake. The surrounding area is mainly composed of paddy fields, with planted Cyryptomeria japonica, fields, and low hills dotted with houses on the north side.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
